What’s New in the Apollo Air 2023

Apollo Air 2023

The Apollo Air 2023 comes from a line of compact electric scooters that are specifically designed for commuting. It's easy to carry, transport, and store, just like its forerunners. But now, it boasts upgraded components and features like self-healing tires, turn signals, brighter lights, and a higher water-resistance rating.

Here are some more of the upgrades you can expect to see from the Apollo Air 2023:

  • Regenerative braking
  • A new handlebar with ergonomically designed grips
  • Better designed throttles with better spring response and bigger buttons
  • Zero-wobble folding mechanism

Even though the Apollo Air is lightweight, it is highly durable. Crafted from aircraft-grade aluminium and propelled by a robust 500W motor, it can handle challenging urban terrain with ease and provides a stable and reliable ride.

What’s New in the Segway-Ninebot MAX G2

Segway MAX G2

While the Segway-Ninebot MAX G2 doesn't share the moniker of its predecessor, it's actually the upgraded version of the legendary Segway-Ninebot MAX G30P.

The original MAX was hailed for many things—excellent performance and features that were ahead of its time—but it sorely lacked suspension. This time, the MAX G2 sets out to address all the gaps of the MAX G30P in terms of suspension, motor output, climb ability, rider weight capacity, and brakes.

It delivers everything the MAX G30P did, but now with the added bonus of a built-in suspension system, among other upgrades like a higher speed (from the G30P’s 30 kph to the G2’s 35 kph) and better range (from 65 to 70 km).

Here are some of the G2’s key features:

  • Front hydraulic and rear adjustable double-spring suspension
  • Front and rear indicators
  • Anti-skid traction control system
  • Segway-Ninebot's RideyLONG™ Self-Developed Technology

At 24 kg, the MAX G2 is heavier than the G30P, but this extra weight makes room for enhancements, including its powerful 450W motor, that create a more comfortable ride.

Apollo Air 2023 vs. Segway-Ninebot MAX G2

Now that we’ve gotten you acquainted with the two powerhouses, it’s time to compare the two in terms of performance, handling, safety features, and more.

Performance

Power Output

On the subject of motor power, the Apollo Air 2023 does not differ much from its predecessor. Fitted with the same 500W motor, it produces sufficient power for city riding as well as effortlessly handling urban obstacles.

What we have observed, however, is the noticeable improvement in acceleration, going from 0 to 24 kph in just 5 seconds—a result of the more efficient throttle.

In contrast, the Segway-Ninebot MAX G2 has gotten an upgrade, sporting a 450W motor against the G30P’s 350W motor. This upgrade has resulted in a higher top speed (35 kph vs. 30 kph) and better acceleration.

Top Speed

The Apollo Air 2023 and the Segway-Ninebot MAX G2 have nearly identical top speeds of 34 kph and 35 kph, respectively.

While the top speed may initially appear modest, it's important to emphasise that this is perfect for urban environments. The electric scooter's precision-calibrated power output combined with its streamlined lightweight design means a top speed of 34-35 kph provides optimal navigation in traffic and ensures safe manoeuvring on busy streets.

Range

One of the biggest upgrades you will find in the Apollo Air 2023 is the range. While the previous version only had a maximum range of 31 km, the 2023 version is now equipped to cover up 55 km.

While both versions are fitted with the same 540 Wh battery, the difference is in the new 21700 top quality cells. Known for their higher density and longer lifespan, the result of adding these cells is more consistent power output and, consequently, superior range.

Now, even though both models have similar top speeds, the Segway-Ninebot MAX G2 trumps the Apollo Air in terms of range. While the latter already covers an impressive 55 km on a single charge, the MAX G2 achieves an even more remarkable maximum range at 70 km.

But aside from its 551 Wh battery, MAX G2’s extended range is made possible by the brand’s RideyLong™ technology, which coordinates between the motor, tyres, and the optimised controller algorithm.

On a commuter electric scooter, this means you can go to work or school, run errands, and navigate the city without worrying about finding a suitable charging station.

Hill Climbing Ability

In the past, regular commuter electric scooters were not expected to be excellent hill climbers. Now, e-scooters have come a long way, and hill climbing ability has become a necessity, especially if your daily commutes involve uphill rides.

The Apollo Air 2023 is a good hill-climber, scaling inclines up to 18%. But the Segway-Ninebot MAX G2 is even better, with a maximum hill climb capability of 22%. This means you can tackle even the steepest hills in your route.

Verdict:

Despite having similar motor outputs and top speeds, the Segway-Ninebot MAX G2 emerges as the more powerful electric scooter. By covering a greater range and climbing steeper angles, it’s a good choice for riders who need a ride that can handle long-distance rides challenging terrain.

Handling

Suspension

Suspension is an essential feature on newer commuter electric scooters, as it smooths out the ride and protects riders from shocks and vibrations on rough pavements.

That said, the Apollo Air 2023 has a front fork suspension that allows it to glide over uneven surfaces. On the other hand, the Segway-Ninebot MAX G2 guarantees smoother rides with its front hydraulic and rear double-spring suspension system.

Tyres

The new Apollo Air is also upgraded to sport 10-inch self-healing tubeless tyres. Aside from being slightly wider than the previous version, the tyres also feature a better tread pattern for increased grip and traction. Plus, because they’re self-healing, you no longer need to worry about flat tyres.

Similarly, the Segway-Ninebot G2 MAX is also equipped with 10-inch self-healing tubeless tyres that help soak up bumps from the road. You don’t have to worry about flat tyres either, as they come with a sealant that repairs minor punctures.

Brakes

Both the Apollo Air 2023 and the Segway-Ninebot G2 MAX sport a braking system that consists of a front drum and regenerative brakes.

Although costlier electric scooters may come with disc brakes, using drum brakes on commuter e-scooters is a smart move, as they are also durable but easier and less expensive to maintain.

Combined with regenerative brakes, the braking systems on these electric scooters are not only powerful but also efficient in extending range and the battery life.

Traction Control

Though the Apollo Air has all the hardware needed for a smooth ride, the Segway-Ninebot MAX G2 takes things further with the Anti-Skid Traction Control System software. This technology controls the e-scooter to improve traction and maintain stability on difficult roads such as gravel tracks or slippery paths.

Verdict:

When it comes to handling, Apollo Air 2023 and the Segway-Ninebot MAX G2 are so evenly matched in terms of features, comfort, and stability that we almost called this round a draw. However, the latter is able to maintain its edge thanks to its Anti-Skid technology.

Safety Features

Lights and Indicators

If you need to ride your electric scooter in the dark, either the Apollo Air 2023 or the Segway-Ninebot MAX G2 would be a great option.

The former is fitted with an adjustable 500-lumen front light and a taillight that also acts as the e-scooter’s braking indicator. Likewise, the MAX G2 also comes with a standard lighting system, namely a 2.1W headlight and a flashing rear brake light.

However, the most exciting feature of these electric scooters is their turn signals for easy communication with other road users.

The Apollo Air 2023 has turn signals embedded in the handlebars. Because they are self-cancelling, you don't have to worry about forgetting to turn them off. Similarly, the Segway-Ninebot MAX G2 also has turn signals integrated into the handlebars.

Water Resistance

The new Apollo Air has an impressive IP66 water resistance rating, which offers a high level of protection against dust and powerful water jets. This is a significant upgrade over the previous model's IP54 rating, which means now you can ride with confidence in any weather.

On the other hand, there is no water-resistance rating upgrade for the Segway-Ninebot MAX G2. Sporting the same IPX5 rating as the G30P, it is decently protected against rain but does not have a high level of security against dust particles.

Verdict:

While both models have comprehensive lighting systems, the Apollo Air 2023 wins this round with its superior water resistance rating, which is rare for a commuter electric scooter. Hence, the Air 2023 is a great choice if you are looking for a ride that offers a high level of protection against the elements.

Portability

Unit Weight

The Air has always been the lightest electric scooter in Apollo’s inventory, and it remains so today. Though slightly heavier than its forerunner, the 17.5-kg Apollo Air 2023 is still within a comfortable weight range for most commuters, even those who need to carry their rides upstairs or transport them via car or public transit.

By contrast, the 24.3-kg Segway-Ninebot MAX G2 is heavier and does not really qualify as a lightweight electric scooter. While most people can still carry it upstairs or transport it, it's definitely not as effortless as lugging the Apollo Air around.

Folding Mechanism

Refined to have an even stronger and more secure folding mechanism, the new Apollo Air now features more fasteners for the stem and a new clip-in hook system that prevents accidental unlatching, so you can be sure your scooter will stay folded when you need it to. Overall, the folding mechanism stays in place, removing any need for manual adjustments.

On the other hand, the Segway-Ninebot MAX G2 uses the same easy-folding design found on other Segway-Ninebot scooters. While it's not an upgrade, Segway-Ninebot's folding mechanism is already known for being secure and effortless, requiring only three steps to fold and unfold.

Verdict:

Unquestionably, the Apollo Air 2023 takes the win this round thanks to its ultra-lightweight design and the significant upgrades to its folding mechanism.

Rider Capacity

As we always say here, when assessing an electric scooter’s capacity, remember to add at least 10% of your own weight to account for any additional load, such as groceries, a laptop bag, or packages. For example, if you weigh 100 kg, you need an e-scooter that can comfortably support at least 110.

The Apollo Air 2023’s riding capacity is limited at 100 kg, so it’s not exactly the ideal electric scooter if you are a heavier rider. Meanwhile, the capacity of the Segway-Ninebot MAX G2 is slightly better and able to accommodate riders up to 120 kg.

Verdict:

The Segway-Ninebot MAX G2 wins this round due to being more inclusive, with a higher weight limit that accommodates a wider range of commuters.

Price

The Apollo Air 2023 and Segway-Ninebot MAX G2 are packed with premium components and high-end features, yet they are still surprisingly affordable. Here at Electric Kicks, the Apollo Air is currently on sale for only $1,399, while the MAX G2 is a steal at just $1,499.

Verdict:

With near-identical price tags, both the Apollo Air 2023 and Segway-Ninebot MAX G2 offer excellent value for money. At this price point, whichever model you choose, you're sure to get a top-notch ride.
