We'll match you with your ideal ride from light and portable to fast and powerful

Learn More About Electric Bikes

The micromobility industry has exploded over the past years, and with Australians’ deep-rooted love for cycling, the market for electric bikes is ripe for further expansion.

The country has no shortage of cycling-friendly infrastructures, not to mention the abundance of scenic views that one can enjoy while riding. Electric bicycles in Australia are definitely here to stay, poised to change the commuting landscape for good.

If you are looking to experience the benefits of an electric ride without fully giving up the virtues of bicycling, check out our selection of electric bikes for sale.

Whether you’re looking for a more affordable way to commute, a new way to conquer mountain bike trails, or simply a chance to get out of the house more often, Electric Kicks has an ebike for you.

Electric Bikes vs. Traditional Bikes and E-Scooters

At first glance, you might not observe many differences between an electric bike and a traditional bike. You’re not wrong, as many ebikes closely resemble a traditional bike in terms of appearance and riding mechanics.

An electric bike is basically a bicycle equipped with a motor, batteries, and other electronic components. These additional parts contribute to the electric bike’s overall weight, making them heavier and bulkier than most traditional bikes.

But e-bikes tend to be more robust, too. A good electric bicycle is equipped with sufficient motor power and battery capacity to conquer inclines and tough roads with relative ease.

What about electric scooters? While e-scooters are also a popular mode of personal transportation, an e-bike is the better option if you prefer a more active role in your riding experience, or if you have to travel longer distances each ride.

Unlike most electric scooters, an ebike’s motor is meant to supplement human power, not completely replace it. In power-assisted bicycles (the road-legal e-bike option in Australia), the rider still needs to pedal to get the bike to move – although not with the same level of effort required by a conventional bike.

(Conversely, if pedalling is not for you, come check out our inventory of electric scooters)

The Benefits of an Electric Bike

Switching to an electric bicycle offers numerous advantages that you might not have considered yet. Here are some of the benefits of using an electric bike:

  • Cycling with less stress and impact: Through pedal assist, riders can navigate hills and difficult terrain with less impact on their joints and legs. Regardless of gender and age, every rider can experience the joys of cycling without physical pain and exhaustion.
  • Better speed and more range: Most of our e-bikes are able to achieve an average top speed of 45 kph and cover up to 100 km per charge. Thus, compared to a traditional bike or most e-scooters, you can ride farther and faster on an electric bicycle.
  • Cost-effective commutes: Riding your e-bike to work or school is cheaper and more convenient than driving or taking public transportation. With an electric bike, you can say goodbye to inconvenient mass transit schemes and schedules and the steep costs associated with driving cars.
  • Improved physical fitness: Because riders of power-assisted bicycles still need to pedal, they get to enjoy the benefits of rigorous cardiovascular exercise: building muscle, burning calories, and improving overall stamina.
  • Mental clarity: An e-bike offers a convenient way to move around, empowering individuals to experience a change in scenery and environment, which, in effect, elevates the mood and reduces stress levels.
  • A more eco-friendly way to get around: Finally, an electric bicycle does not release harmful gases into the atmosphere and does not run on fossil fuels – two essential steps for countering climate change and global warming.

Your old bike has served you well, but with an electric bike, you can embrace all the benefits of cycling while saving the planet, maximising your own level of efficiency, and improving your physical and mental wellbeing.

Is It Legal to Ride an E-Bike in Australia?

Australia is one of the most e-bike-friendly countries in the world, and unlike electric scooters, riding electric bikes is generally legal across the states. However, it is crucial to note that each state may have its own set of regulations and restrictions.

That said, we highly recommend practising due diligence by brushing up on your state’s laws and checking for relevant updates. You also need to be aware of any restrictions your local city council might have implemented.

Different Electric Bike Styles

Much like traditional bikes, electric-powered bicycles are available in different styles to suit every lifestyle and preference. Here are the types of e-bikes we offer:

Commuter Electric Bikes

An ideal alternative to cars, a commuter electric bike is perfect for navigating congested roads and weaving through traffic. A good commuter e-bike can achieve moderate speeds and a range that is sufficient for taking you from Point A to B. It is also typically lighter than other types of e-bike for efficient carrying and transporting.

Cruiser Electric Bikes

Reminiscent of vintage cruiser bikes, the cruiser e-bike is built for leisure. With its oversized handlebars, upright riding position, and ultra-comfortable seats, the cruiser electric bike paints a picture of casual riding by the beach. Still, these bikes are equipped with powerful motors for conquering slopes with ease.

Fat Tyre Electric Bikes

As its name suggests, fat tyre electric bikes are e-bikes with tyres that are larger than normal. They are equipped with powerful motors and are designed to offer increased shock absorption, stability, and grip. A fat tyre e-bike is your best choice if your route involves going over sand, snow, dirt, and other types of loose terrain.

Electric Cargo & Family Bikes

Electric cargo bikes are designed to have extra storage space, offering a convenient way to get around if you need to transport goods, such as grocery items, packages, and meal deliveries. On the other hand, an electric family bike is accessorised with handrails, foot rests, and other similar parts to safely accommodate young passengers.

Folding Electric Bikes

If you need extra portability, you need to consider getting a folding electric bike. This is a type of e-bike with collapsible parts, allowing you to fold the bike and store it in small spaces, like in your car’s compartment, under the staircase, or under your desk. These e-bikes are also popular among campers and outdoorsmen, as they are convenient to transport.

To choose the right type of e-bike, we recommend making a quick assessment of your situation. Consider your daily activities, your routes and your area’s terrain, your riding style, and your personal needs.

What to Look For in an Electric Bike

No matter which type of electric bike you choose, keep the following factors in mind when making your purchase:

  • Weight: If you plan on carrying your e-bike up and down stairs, aim for something around the 20 kg mark & lower such as one of our commuter e-bikes. E-Bikes are heavier than their non-powered counterparts on account of the extra componentry, but on e-bikes such as fat tyre rides, the extra weight goes into features such as suspension, frame durability, more powerful motors & bigger batteries.
  • Motor: While it may be tempting to buy a high-powered electric bike, remember that motor power directly relates to how much help you get pedalling. If you’re a heavier rider, you’d want to start your search around the 500W mark unless you plan on using your ride on mostly flat surfaces.
  • Suspension: If you’re planning to take your e-bike off the road, consider one with a decent suspension. Look for front fork suspension to protect you against unwanted shocks and vibrations.
  • Brakes: Electric bikes can achieve high top speeds, and this necessitates strong and reliable braking systems. Select an e-bike equipped with mechanical disc brakes or hydraulic brakes for maximum stopping power.
  • Rider Weight Capacity: While most e bikes for sale in Australia can accommodate more than 100 kg of weight, remember to consider any additional load or baggage. If your needs involve transporting heavier merchandise, go for a cargo bike that can safely accommodate up to 200 kg.
