DESCRIPTION
Named after the French word for Adventure, the Aventon Aventure Step Over is bred for those looking to get away from the beaten path with an electric bike. Aventon believes that their attention to detail & small additional features are what makes their electric bikes a cut above the competition, and that’s very evident in the Aventure. Aventon has produced a very solid-feeling fat-tyre electric bike that’s just as capable on dirt tracks & trails as it is on tarmac and roads.
A key part of adventuring on a bike involves going up and down hills, and it’s here that some electric bikes begin to suffer performance issues. Fortunately, the Aventon’s 750W motor puts out a lot of torque, so even on hills with a 10% incline can be tackled on the lowest pedal-assist or even the throttle-only mode.
On smoother surfaces, that motor is capable of pushing a rider to 32kph on the throttle alone, and on the highest pedal-assist setting, you can expect to get up to 50kph. The throttle can be controlled by the thumb as it sits under the handlebars, and the pedal assist mode can be changed using the control panel that sits on top of the bars.
The LCD screen clearly shows speed & assist mode, but unlike a lot of electric ride displays (scooter & bike), the Aventure Step Over’s LCD display shows the exact percentage of battery you have left rather than a bar that gradually depletes. This is incredibly helpful for planning out longer journeys and making sure you have enough juice to get home. The display can also show you how many trees you’ve saved, and how much carbon you’ve saved by using the Aventure to get around.
With its 33kg weight, it’s important to be able to stop quickly, and the Aventure’s 180mm hydraulic disk brakes are powerful enough to bring it to a standstill from 32kph in just 3.3 metres.
The Aventure comes with two frame options: the Step-Over & Step-Through. Both boast a hydroformed aluminium frame, which means that fewer welds are required to piece the bike together. This helps reduce overall weight, and cuts down on potential weak spots in the frame. The result of having a hydroformed frame is a very solid & stable ride.
The Step Through frame is generally more suited to those with limited mobility, or riders that don’t like having to lift their left over the top tube & seat. That said, step-through frames are also helpful for commuters that cycle while wearing regular clothes that may be more restrictive.
The Aventure Step Through is a bike built for life. With its reasonably high-weight, it’s never going to be as practical as a mountain bike, but it doesn’t carry the price point of one either. What you get from the Aventure is a bike that can handle 90% of your cycling trips. It’s smooth & fast on roads. It’s smooth & fast on dirt tracks & cycling trails. It’s smooth and fast going up and down hills. Plus, its IPX4 water resistance rating means it can withstand splashes from any direction, including rain. That means that it is a genuinely decent alternative to getting around town.
E-Bikes at this price point have a tendency to cheap out somewhere, whether it be plastic fenders, cheap forks, cheap brakes or minimal accessories. As a result, cheaper rides can become clunky, bumpy, and rattle a lot over rough terrain.
However, one of the most positively-reviewed features of this ebike is overall build quality. From review sites such as electricbikereport.com to customer reviews, you’ll frequently find references to just how stable & solid the Aventon Aventure actually is. There’s no ride wobble. There’s no rattling from cheap fenders & plastic components. The suspension & fat tyres absorb a lot of lumps and bumps found on country cycle trails, and the custom-made Aventon seats are very comfortable.
Overall, the attention to detail that has gone into the Aventure Step Through is evident, and with this, Aventon have produced one of the best all-rounder electric bikes available at this time.
